Boiler Relocation for Sierra College

Scope of Work

As part of the remodel of buildings H and N on the Rocklin campus, the existing boiler behind building H needed to be relocated to building N to clear the area for demolition and construction. Cooper Oates was selected as the mechanical contractor for the relocation.

Project Constraints

Our team found themselves under a tight deadline due to school starting in the Fall. The project therefore needed to be completed quickly and efficiently to avoid chaos on campus. In addition, the boiler was originally welded in two pieces, proving difficult to complete a single crane pick for the relocation. Additional welding would be required to be able to relocate the boiler in one piece.

Work Performed

Sierra College shut down the boiler and disconnected it from buildings H and N. Cooper Oates welded lifting tabs onto the skid, allowing the boiler to be moved in one piece. The move required two crane picks due to space constraints. After the boiler was successfully relocated, we excavated new trenches to also move gas, electrical, domestic water, and hydronic
supply and return.

After a successful inspection of our completed work, backfilled, compacted and connected all piping to the new boiler. The boiler was started up and proper operation was confirmed- concluding a successful project.

Results

Completed Smoothly and Ahead of Schedule

Building H may now begin its remodel without interference. The remodel will bring new welding facilities to the campus, allowing for an enriched learning environment for students entering the trade.

With our team’s expertise and efficiency, the relocation was smoothly completed in a total of nine working days from start to finish. This resulted in the project being completed ahead of schedule, well before students arrived on campus for the upcoming fall semester at Sierra College to avoid any complications with on-campus traffic.
